Way of the Dragon
for multi-percussion duet
The idea of 'Way of the Dragon' came to life during the COVID-19 pandemic in fall 2020 when Mitchell Carlstrom and Vahid Jahandari collaborated as performers and producers in exploring new approaches in engaging with the creative process remotely. Due to the quarantine, the collaboration continued through Zoom sessions. As the choices for instrumentation and techniques were developed, the music naturally evolved from gongs' buzzing vibrations, calling for completion. Carlstrom recorded the sounds, and Jahandari used a DAW to form a map to be further improvised later on in rehearsals. From the starting point, the two collaborators intended to customize the instruments further, using extended materials, to distance the sounds from their actual timbre and experiment with new possibilities for notating their practice.
猛龍過江 is dedicated to Lee Jun fan, whom the composer had been enormously inspired by as a child, and its urgent return in adulthood for instinctive expansion, strength, and growth is depicted in this work. The title is borrowed from the movie with the same name, regarded as Jun- fan's only complete directorial film. |
